EL AUTOR – Un periodista absorto por el arte de Dylan.
Paul Williams es un periodista y escritor norteamericano, nacido en Boston en 1948 y que ha desarrollado una extensa carrera profesional. Entre sus logros está el haber fundado la revista Crawdaddy! en 1966, la pionera entre las revistas musicales de los Estados Unidos. Ha colaborado en otros muchos medios y escrito libros de diversas temáticas, aunque casi siempre vinculados al mundo de la música.
Su vinculación con este mundo ha sido siempre muy estrecha, conociendo a gran parte de las figuras más importantes de los últimos 50 años y habiendo vivido muchos acontecimientos históricos en primera persona. Como anécdota significativa, se puede señalar que participó en la grabación de “Give Peace a Chance” de Jhon Lennon & Yoko y la Plastic Ono Band, siendo una de las voces que se pueden escuchar en los coros de esa canción tan legendaria.
Paul Williams, además, es un apasionado de la música y de la figura de Bob Dylan. Y lo es hasta un grado sorprendente. Lleva ya publicados tres libros, y tiene proyectado un cuarto, sobre la vida y obra del famoso cantante y compositor, pero estos volúmenes están muy lejos de las biografías al uso. De hecho la vida de Bob Dylan es un aspecto secundario en los libros, pues la atención se centra en analizar las interpretaciones que el artista ha hecho a lo largo de los años de sus propias canciones.
Paul Williams tiene una extensa colección de grabaciones de Bod Dylan, que incluye todos sus discos oficiales, pero sobre todo una inmensa cantidad de material pirata e inédito, que incluye tomas alternativas de estudio y registros en vivo, tanto de audio como de video. El autor describe así su planteamiento: “Mi plan para este libro es bien sencillo: intento describir y hablar de un número significativo (aunque por supuesto incompleto) de las interpretaciones de Bob Dylan, en orden cronológico, durante toda su carrera hasta el momento”.
El resultado son unos volúmenes densísimos de información, detallados hasta el máximo y con toda la apariencia de estar destinados a fans acérrimos del cantante. Pues el contenido transciende con mucho el interés que una persona con una afición media a Dylan pueda tener.
Hasta el momento se han editado tres libros, que recientemente se han puesto a la ventan en nuestro país, con los siguientes títulos: “Bob Dylan – Años de Juventud”, “Bob Dylan – Años de Madurez” y “Bob Dylan – Años de Luces y Sombras”.
Por otra parte, el autor en su página web, informa de un cuarto volumen que pretende abordar en breve, en cuanto logre una base financiera para afrontar el proyecto. De momento ofrece, también en su web, un adelanto de veinticinco páginas y ya tiene el título: “Bob Dylan: The Genius of a Performing Artist
(2003-1990 and back again)”
BOB DYLAN – Una de las figuras musicales más relevantes de siglo XX.
Bob Dylan es uno de los músicos norteamericos de mayor trascendencia de los últimos 100 años. Sus canciones han “atrapado” a varias generaciones, su influencia alcanza a artistas de lo más dispar e incluso ha sido nominado a premio Nóbel de Literatura en varias ocasiones.
Dylan es el prototipo de “no-cantante”… una voz sin ningún atractivo a primera vista, pero que gracias a una gran personalidad y a un modo peculiar de transmitir al oyente unas letras de gran calidad y unas melodías sencillas pero seductoras, ha logrado dejar una profunda huella en millones de personas en todo el mundo.
Nació en Duluth, Minessota, en 1941. El futuro en esa población era poco alentador, pero pronto descubrió en la música la llave para que su vida discurriera por nuevos horizontes.
Primero se enamoró del rock, como oyente y mientras aprendía los rudimentos musicales básicos, pero sus primeros pasos artísticos los dio dentro del mundo del folk en Minnesota, mientras cursaba sus estudios universitarios. Logró destacar dentro de esa escena y alcanzar una fama nada desdeñable en los Estados Unidos a principios de los años 60.
Sin embargo, a medios de la década dio un giro a su carrera y electrificó sus canciones, algo que le granjeó en un principio el rechazo de sus antiguos fans, pero que en realidad fue un síntoma de lo especial de su personalidad artística, siempre empeñado en reinventarse y arriesgar explorando nuevas vías. En este giro inesperado tuvo mucha influencia un viaje a Inglaterra que hizo en 1965, donde conoció personalmente a The Beatles y Eric Burbon (de The Animals).
Tras la incertidumbre inicial, la calidad de sus canciones, sus discos y sus conciertos, con el apoyo de The Band (una banda de apoyo al estilo rock de calidad legendaria), se impuso y su figura creció hasta la leyenda.
Durante los 60 y 70 creo sus mejores canciones, legando discos que se encuentran por derecho propio en los anales de la historia del rock: “Times There Area A-Changin” (1964), “Blonde on Blonde” (1966), “Nashville Skyline” (1969), “Before the Flood” (1974), “Desire” (1976)… por citar solo algunos.
A finales de los años 70 experimentó una crisis interior con la religión como elemento central. Abandonó el judaísmo, su profesión de origen familiar, y abrazó el cristianismo. Este hecho tuvo importantes connotaciones que revertieron en su música.
Las décadas de los 80 y 90 fueron años oscuros en la carrera musical de Bob Dylan, publicando sus discos menos brillantes y pasando etapas personales muy difíciles.
Acercándose el cambio de siglo el genio parece recuperarse y vuelve a brillar con discos como “Time Out of Mind” (1997) y “Love and Theft” (2001). También en estos años comienza a publicar su autobiografía, existiendo actualmente dos volúmenes en circulación.
Su último disco publicado hasta el momento es “Love and Theft” (2001), que hace el número 43 de su discografía oficial.
LOS LIBROS – Cada volumen ofrece…
Libro I – “BOB DYLAN – Años de Juventud”
Abarca desde el año 1960 hasta 1973, lo que implica recorrer su infancia, sus estudios, su creciente afición por la música y sus inicios artísticos hasta alcanzar una primera etapa de gran éxito abrazado al folk y después girar hacia la electrificación.
En este libro se desvela el enfoque el autor ha dado a toda la colección. Los apuntes biográficos son secundarios, si bien es inevitable que en las páginas de niñez y juventud éstos predominen, y centra el foco de atención en analizar canciones e interpretaciones.
El libro tiene veintiún capítulos divididos en seis partes. Además, consta de una serie de apéndices con discografía, filmografía y bibliografía. Todo en un total de 299 páginas.
Libro II – “BOB DYLAN – Años de Madurez”
Este volumen estudio la producción “dylaniana” entre los años 1974 y 1986. Un periodo especialmente interesante, porque incluye algunas de sus mejores obras, pero también momentos de profunda crisis y la derivación hacia los años más duros de su vida.
El libro despega con el regreso de Dylan a los escenarios, tras siete años apartado de la luz pública. Explica aspectos de la formación de la banda de acompañamiento con la que trabajaría durante años… la Rolling Thunder Revenue. Sus colaboraciones y relaciones con otros artistas. Aspectos de su vida personal que influyeron en su arte. El grave accidente de moto que le dejó postrado durante meses. Y el conflicto interior que removió sus convicciones más intimas y le hizo dejar el judaísmo y abrazar el cristianismo.
El enfoque del libro es esencia el mismo de la anterior entrega, destacando algunos momentos en los que el autor defiende la grandeza de Bob Dylan, llegándole a comparar con genios de la entidad de Charlie Chaplin, Pablo Picasso o James Joyce.
El volumen consta de 318 páginas, con diecisiete capítulos organizados en nueve partes y los apéndices bibliográficos, de filmografía y discografía.
Libro III – “BOB DYLAN – Años de Luces y Sombras”
Abarcando teóricamente los años 1986 a 1990, pero abordando en los dos capítulos finales información correspondiente a la década de los 90 e inicios del siglo XXI (hasta mayo del 2001 en concreto), el autor analiza en esta ocasión la etapa más dura en la vida de Bob Dylan, y para muchos, la fase en la que el músico rebajó considerablemente su calidad y pedió el rumbo artístico.
En el texto Paul Williams combina el enfoque habitual de la colección con las descripciones y reflexiones sobre los momentos vitales que Dylan experimentaba, contextualizándolo en las largas giras y en el amplio reconocimiento del público simultaneo al bajón moral interior: incluso se explica que en 1987 el cantante declaró que no podía recordar el significado y motivación de las canciones que cantaba y que compuso años atrás.
Como ya hemos indicado los dos últimos capítulos abordan desde 1990 hasta 2001, años en los que finalmente la buena estrella de Dylan volvió a brillar, con discos que sus seguidores y la crítica han ensalzado por su calidad y por enlazar directamente con sus discos más brillantes.
Este libro consta de 380 páginas, con dieciséis capítulos organizados en seis partes. Los apéndices finales incluyen los apartados habituales y uno muy especial: un cuadro de honor con los nombres de las personas que adelantaron dinero al autor para que pudiera afrontar la realización de la obra.
EL CUARTO VOLUMEN – Un proyecto que necesita unos cimientos…
Paul Williams ya tiene proyectado el cuarto volumen de su colección, que se llamará (en su versión original en inglés): “Volume 4 – The Genios of a Performing Artist, 2003-1990 and back again”.
Si bien, según informa en su página web, la realización de este libro solo la puede afrontar si logra una base económica para sustentar a su familiar durante los tres años que espera invertir en su realización.
Así, de la misma forma que hizo con el tercer volumen, propone la participación de los apasionados de Bob Dylan, que mediante aportaciones voluntarias le proporcionen esa base económica. Propone cuatro figuras: Subscribers, Sponsors, Patrons y Benefactors. Los primeros aportarán 60$, los segundos 100$ (o más), los terceros 200$ (o más) y los cuartos de 5000$ en adelante.
A cambio aparecerán en el cuadro de honor del libro y recibirán una primera edición en tirada limitada, firmada y numerada, además de ser informados periódicamente del estado de avance de la obra.
Los tres primeros libros de esta colección entorno a la obra de Bob Dylan han sido traducidos al español y publicados en España por la editorial Robin Book, dentro de su serie Ma Non Troppo. El lanzamiento de los libros se ha hecho de forma progresiva durante el último año y medio. Los títulos originales de los libros, en inglés, son : “Bob Dylan. Performing Artist. 1960 – 1973”, “Bob Dylan: Performing Artist. The Middle Years 1974 – 1986” y “Bob Dylan. Performing Artists. 1986 – 1990 & Beyond. Mind Out Of Time”. Y fueron publicados en su versión original en los años 1990, 1992 y 2004 respectivamente.
El autor tiene editados más libros sobre Bod Dylan, entre los que se puede destacar “Bob Dylan: Watching The River Flor”, del año 1996, una recopilación del ensayos entorno a la figura y obra del músico y compositor.
